How to Reset a Tire Pressure Light

Is your tire pressure light still on, even though you already inflated your tires? If so, then chances are, you need to reset it. Because your tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is so important for your own safety, making sure that it’s functioning properly and its lights activate only when necessary is crucial. Unsure how to reset a tire pressure light? Follow these steps from Kistler Ford, and always feel free to bring your vehicle to our Service Center near Sylvania.

Reset Your Tire Pressure Light

When your tire pressure light goes on, the first thing you need to do is check that your tires are properly inflated. When you add more air, the light should go off on its own. However, if it remains on, consider the following action you can take:

  • Hit the highway near Maumee and drive at 50 mph or above for 10 minutes. The next time you turn on the car, the light should no longer be on.
  • Turn your key to the “On” position without starting the engine. When all electronics power up, hold the TPMS reset button until the tire pressure light blinks three times. Release, start the car, and wait 20 minutes for the sensor to refresh. Check your owner’s manual to determine where the TPMS reset button is.
  • Start by overinflating all tires to 3 PSI more than what is recommended for your specific tires (including the spare tire, as it may have a sensor, too). Then, deflate them all completely, and reinflate them to the appropriate tire pressure.
  • Make sure your vehicle is turned off, and pop the hood of your car. Disconnect the positive battery cable using a wrench. Turn the car on and honk the horn for 3 seconds to discharge any power stored in the battery. Reconnect the battery, and check to see if the tire pressure light has turned off.

What Does a Flashing Tire Pressure Light Mean?

Is your tire pressure light flashing? This may indicate that the battery needs to be replaced, or that there is an issue with a sensor in a tire. In either case, you should schedule service at Kistler Ford near Perrysburg, so that our expert technicians can diagnose any problems and return you to the Toledo streets safely.
